Awards & Accomplishments

Many student plays, originally developed at the Missouri Playwrights Workshop (MPW) have won awards through the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), the primary juried University theatre competition in the United States. Several have been finalists in the play showcase at both the Region V American College Theatre Festival and the National Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.. These include:

Kate Sinnett's Obscenity (national finalist runner-up)

2000
Robert AuFrance's Horsefly Summer (national finalist runner-up)

2001
Kate Berneking Kogut's Assumption #1: Truckers (regional finalist, national finalist runner-up)

2002
Matt Lescher's Grease Me Up (Regional Finalist)
Kate Berneking Kogut's Assumption #1: Truckers was presented at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) 2002 New Play Development Workshop.
Kate Berneking Kogut's play Another Trail was a semi-finalist in the Mildred & Albert Panowski Playwriting Competition.

2003
Jamie Lindemann's West West Paper Route, National Finalist
Kate Sinnett's Obscenity was a finalist in the National Ten-Minute Play Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville.
Kate Berneking Kogut's A New Perspective will be presented at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) 2003 New Play Development Workshop.
David White's Ain't Nuthin Quick 'n Easy (2003 Mark Twain Comedy Award) (David White has served as the Literary Manager for the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, and is currently the co-artistic director of WordBridge, Inc.)

OTHER AWARDS, PRODUCTIONS, PUBLICATIONS OF MPW PLAYS
David White's Ain't Nuthin Quick 'n Easy (2003 WordBridge Festival)

Plays by David Crespy, developed at the MPW include Violet Palimpsest produced at the ATHE New Play Development Workshop and published in ATHE's new play publication BIND THEM CONTINUALLY; Beshert (first of a trilogy of one-acts titled The Jewish Dating Cycle) published in Playwriting MasterClass, edited by Michael Wright, winner Panelist's Choice at Edward Albee's Last Frontier Theatre Conference; Perfect Hair published in Gary Garrison's Perfect Ten, produced in New York at the New York Theatre Source; David Crespy's Queen's Orphans produced at CAP 21 in New York City as part of a showcase of new work produced by the Foundation for the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers; David Crespy's Tek'ya workshop production, directed by Suzanne Burgoyne, funded by Summer Research Fellowship.

Several MU faculty have had their plays developed at MPW including David Crespy's Men Dancing, Tek'ya, The Jewish Dating Cycle, and Seven Were Hanged, Henry Sullivan (Calvary II and The Whore Tax of Nevada), Michael Kramer's Eight Hours, Gladys Swann's The Bathtub, Weldon Durham (adaptation of Treasure Island), and Ethan Bumas's The Sign Shop, William Yellow Robe's Sneaky and The Star Quilter, and Bert State's Oedipus, The Early Years, Theodore J. Flicker's Robert E. Lee, R.I.P. Scott Fosdick's Up and Down in America.

The MPW has developed more than 1000 plays over the past ten years and looks forward to a busy season of new plays by professional playwrights, students, faculty, staff, and community members in Columbia, Mo.
