Scholarships, Assistantships & Financial Aid

Undergraduate Scholarships & Financial Aid

In addition to assistance provided through the MU Office of Financial Aid, the department awards several scholarships based on talent, academic achievement and involvement in the theatre program. Although you may apply for and receive scholarships from the University of Missouri-Columbia, the Department of Theatre does not usually offer scholarships to incoming freshmen. In cases of demonstrated talent, along with recommendations from high school teachers, special cases may be considered. The following scholarships will be awarded yearly to current students who have been active in the department and who have met specific requirements of the individual scholarships. Any of these scholarships may be awarded to one student, split among several students, or one student may receive multiple scholarships. The award amounts can range from $200 to $1,000 per scholarship.

Donovan and Peggy Rhynsburger Scholarship
Awarded to theatre majors with a 2.5 grade point average after 75 semester hours and significant contribution to the department through extensive involvement in performance, technical theatre and service.

Terry Perkins Scholarship for Comedic Actresses
Awarded to women theatre majors with a GPA of 2.5 and significant contributions to the department through participation in theatrical productions.

Terry Perkins (AB, 1980) entered the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1977 and developed into one of the theatre department's funniest performers. She appeared in many department productions, including the 1981 Summer Repertory Theatre. She accepted a graduate assistantship at Mankato State University where she completed her MFA in acting. Terry was a professional actress in Minneapolis where she died from breast cancer in 1996. This scholarship was established by her family, friends and the MU Department of Theatre.

Sol Feinstone Scholarship
Awarded to theatre majors with a 2.5 grade point average and significant contribution and service to the University through intensive involvement in acting or technical theater.

John-Ross Berneche Scholarship
Awarded to theatre performance majors with a grade point average of 2.5.

Tom Berenger Acting Scholarship
Awarded to theatre majors with a 2.6 grade point average after 75 semester hours and extensive involvement as an actor in the production program.

James M. Miller Musical Theatre Endowment
Provides unrestricted support to the Department of Theatre, which may include scholarships for student performers in musical theatre.

Curators Scholarships in Theatre
Undergraduates are recommended by faculty members in the theatre department on the basis of scholastic excellence, financial need and forensic ability as demonstrated through participation in high-school or University activities.

George C. Scott Memorial Scholarship presented by the Episcopal Actors Guild of America
Sponsored by the Episcopal Actors Guild, the George C. Scott Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in theatre performance with an interest either in acting or directing. Based on both talent and commitment to the theatre program, the award goes to a student with a cumulative 2.6 GPA or higher. In addition, the scholarship will be awarded to a different student every year.
